Two weeks ago I posted about an issue with the favorites menu in
Internet Explorer on an XP computer at work. I stated that a small
chad appeared near a subfolder of Favorites and blocked me from
accessing the contents until I closed and reopened explorer. No
suggestions.
Yesterday, Sat June 28th, I posted about my printer printing websites
I visited a long time ago instead of the document I intended to
print. No takers.
Do you experts on here simply not know the answer to these odd
problems or are you ignoring me as a poster??
I need to know.

1. This isn't a professional helpdesk
2. As for "No replies to your postings" .... James replied - you just
didn't like his answer:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.computer/browse_thread/thread/49bd5f19efbd4863/7c3339f044cdc991?lnk=gst&q=ChrisCoaster#7c3339f044cdc991
but it's true that no one can remotely solve ( for free) a problem about
something that happens on your pc every 2 weeks for a moment. We can point
you in "general troubleshooting "directions, but not solve it, if the
problem posed is :
' > > On occasion, ... a small "chad" (about the size of a period) appears
....
| Quote: |
The problem clears up after closing the browser and reopening it, but
re-occurs at random. "
|
James gave you a good idea of what to do - we read that and figured -
'Yeah do that and you're all set' . No need for us to add to his
diagnosis. After DOING what is recommended - then reply to thread stating
:
I DID THAT and now the result is ....
Since it's a work PC, if it really bothers you, I'd just ask IT to reimage
it - takes them half hour.
Backup "your stuff" that is ON the Pc - restore the image - copy "your
stuff" back. That fixes any OS problem. |

I initially chalked it up to "Vista's learning curve" so touted in
magazines and literature about Vista.
It is just recently that I sought help on the issue. And no, it takes
some effort to type the keys "Ctrl" and "P" simultaneously, so that is
not the case.

In your case, both For you HP problem I would have suspected an old

ship your PC ASAP to the Ghostbusters headquarters. Or you are taking
some strong/strange medicine.

But the point is - and perhaps I didn't mention it - is that the
website that started printing was not something I wanted/or attempted
to print!
That's my understanding... But did you check that your print queue was
empty before printing?
And no, I dont take any "medicine".

I didn't know that checking the print cue was a routine procedure

I'm not making that a routine procedure either... but when things start
getting weird, routine behavior becomes insufficient.

Most people just click print or go File > Print, then select their
options and hit print from there.

So do I. But when I don't get the right output, I go to the print queue
to see if it's there, after whatever is printing.

Again if you read what I've been posting I NEVER at anytime asked it
to print ANY pages from a WEBSITE. I was printing a slide from a
PowerPoint presentation, and when I clicked print the pages from the
website started printing. I went in the cue and canceled the
request.

Acknowledged. But let me rephrase this: "I NEVER at anytime asked it
*CONSCIOUSLY* to print ANY pages from a WEBSITE". We are not talking
about any random website here, but one you visited. Printing a page is
just a Ctrl-P away on IE (which is the browser you use), and mistyping
happens. I'm not saying that this is what happened, but that it is still
a bit more likely than a gremlin taking hold of your PC. If the problem
isn't reproducible, your guess is as good as mine anyway, but the
usefulness of an answer is fairly low in this case since it won't happen
again. |

"it": printing a web site? Then take the habit to monitor your print
queue (or to have a printer conected at all time), so you'll know when
something is added to it. Otherwise, if it's three different weird
things, then waving dead chickens may help.

Ah, Vista... then yes, you have a gremlin, and your computer is 0wn3d.

Less effort than to chew gum and walk simultaneously... Check your IE7
online help for other "Print" shortcuts, though (I don't use IE, and
only have a lowly IE6 on this computer) |

What if Chris had some other hot key combo defined for printing ?
It might not take control-P, but some other key combination.
Maybe there is more than one way to trigger printing.
Or, the web page itself is bringing up the print dialog box. I've had
that happen on web sites, and had to click "cancel" to make it
go away. Maybe if he visits a web site that uses HTML to trigger
printing, that might do it. I'd want to examine the URL and
the page source, to see if that is possible. I don't know if Vista
would present the dialog, with an opportunity to cancel or not, because
I don't use Vista.
