my wife's monitor (an LG flatscreen) is deteriorating. The symptoms
include blurriness and shadows falling to the right of images. It's less
than 2 years old. The only thing we can think of is that's been rather
humid lately. Is it pooched, or can it be saved? TIA. |

Have you tested the monitor on another computer ?
Is the monitor interface VGA or DVI ?
Shadows or blur, sound like a VGA interface with reflections
on it, due to a bad video card output, bad video cable, or
improper terminations on the line (that would be components
inside the monitor). If the cable is integrated into the monitor,
and cannot be removed, it would be pretty hard to swap and try
another cable.

If it is not the display card or the cable, then it is failing
components in the monitor. You can test by using process of elimination.

after cleaning it (with compressed air) as best she could, most of the
problem has disappeared. |

So that means dust was able to fall onto the CCFL lamps ? I
wouldn't have thought it could get down there.
I've heard of actual bugs being able to get behind a screen,
but not local bugs (i.e. not introduced by the customer).
The bugs may have been present, when the product was assembled
at the factory.
Interesting, I'll have to file this away for future reference.
