|
|
I have just recieved this laptop with Vista installed on it. And i
want to make it Win XP.
I know That's easy but i have a biig problem.
First of all I update the BIOS.
Second, When i start loading from the boot cd of Win Xp It can't find
the Hard drive that is installed in the laptop
This is the big problem When I Go Into the BIOS to disable the option
that vista like puts the hard drive in hide mode
its not there I can't see it it's gone or it has never been installed
in the BIOS.
Can some one help me with this problem, I wanted to try to erase the
whole BIOS and try to flash the bios with a new one but i can't seem
to find any programs to do so, since it's not my laptop I'm not going
to put a screwdriver on it.
I tried nearly everything i could even making a partition of the hard
drive, formatting the hard drive and installing it on a desktop pc,
and then try to insert it back in the laptop but still nothing. the
only thing i got is windows booting and than a BSOD.
thanks alot in advance for the help |

Are we allowed to know the make and model of laptop ?
The purpose of a BIOS is "basic input output system". It has just
enough code, to know how to read the hard drive, and that is how
the OS is able to boot. Early in the boot process, the BIOS
routines are used to access the hard drive. Just as the desktop
is about to appear, the drivers you loaded into the OS (by pressing
F6 or by relying on drivers already in WinXP) take over.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS
I don't see a particular reason, why "blowing away" the BIOS is
going to change anything. If Vista was able to boot with the
existing BIOS, that means the BIOS is working just fine.
If it was my computer, I would concentrate on determining
what driver is needed to work with the hard drive. And
whether I needed to press F6 and install that driver,
during the WinXP install. And that starts with the make and
model of laptop, tracing down what chipset is used inside
the laptop, and so on. If the manufacturer supports downgrading
to WinXP, there may already be drivers on their web site.
If not (no help for WinXP users), then you'll need to research
the hardware yourself. And preferably, while the laptop
still has a bootable OS on it. If the machine is trashed,
I'd probably try one of my Linux CDs, just so I could
run "dmesg", "lspci", and "lsusb", and see what hardware
is inside the machine.
If you do a web search, in some cases, people who have
already done a downgrade for your model, may have
prepared a text description of how to do it.
The computer may well have a "recovery partition", to
reinstall Vista if the main partition is corrupted. If
you've trashed the machine, but not erased the hard drive
completely, it may be possible for you to recover. In
addition, many laptops will support the burning of a
set of "recovery CDs" or "recovery DVD", which would allow
the end user of the laptop, to put back Vista at some
future date. You should ensure you've burned the
recovery optical media, verified it is readable in
another computer, before continuing with the install
of WinXP. You never know, you may need an "escape
mechanism", to save you from your installation attempts.

Most of the time that problem occurs because the hard drive is installed on
a SATA channel that is in AHCI mode. Vista can install directly on SATA
drives in AHCI mode but XP needs extra drivers.
One possible way around the problem is to put the SATA channel in IDE mode
in the BIOS.
XP will recognise the hard-drive if the SATA channel is in IDE mode and
instal directly.
IDE mode goes by a number of different names depending on the brand of BIOS. |

That is a big and important "If". Not all computers are capable of a
downgrade, sadly.
Mine, for example, wasn't. |

Have a look around. There was one chipset, which lacked WinXP drivers
at launch. But eventually, there were some drivers floating about.
The situation may change. And the drivers needed, may be hosted on
some other manufacturer's site (i.e. Dell computer ends up using a
chipset driver from an HP download). Which is why I recommend looking
for someone's "recipe", as there are some users gifted enough to
write up all the details of how to do it. Saves a lot of work.
The writeups may be present on a support forum for the product.

That would be nice. I am no more of a fan of Vista now than I was months
ago.
It is somewhat like owning a Yugo...it works, sort of, between problems. |
