On occasion, when accessing links within certain folders in Favorite
in Internet Explorer7, the folder will not open. What's real creepy:
A small "chad"(about the size of a period) appears to the upper-right-
hand of the branch that will not open.

The problem clears up after closing the browser and reopening it, but
re-occurs at random. What the heck's going on?

nobody really cares about the infinite number of irrelevant little
quirks and WHY they happen. (unless they already ran into it and know)

The question is what to do about it.

see if you can mess around where IE stores favourites
C:\Documents and Settings\name\Favorites

and create a new folder, put the contents of the funny folder there.
check the attributes..

You should try to
a)make a good folder bad
b)make a bad folder good

and to get things working.. make a good folder , and copy your
contents from the funny folder in there.. And see if it then goes bad.
And if so, try to narrow down what it was. By repeating the process
and copying file by file

You can control the favourites alot from that
C:\Documents and Settings\name\Favorites

or probably from IE.. favourites..organize favourites.

I don't really use the favourites.. I type fast into the address bar
and it autocompletes often enough anyway. adn I type things into
google and the full website comes up.

Actually it is a virus that is interrogating your PC and while looking for
financial records within your favorites the author ( His name is Chad)
displays a chad the size of a period.

Now - do you feel better ?
Solution - same as before: if you don't like it , restore PC.

There is no "restore PC" option. That's your invention, and it could
confuse 2 very different things.

Do you really call your computer a "PC" or are you patronizing him and
giving stupid terms to other people - including potential future
techies. A techie would call it a computer, not a PC. And there's no
reason why you have to encourage joe bloggs to call it PC. Why don't
you go all the way and encourage him to call the internet the
"information superhighway", too?

There is Windows XP System Restore, which is a 2 minute thing.

And there is reinstalling windows, which is a much longer thing,
typically hours.

And if it really was a virus (like you suggested in jest), then you
might want to remove the partitions, maybe restore the MBR(quick so,
may as well). And then reinstall windows.

Furthermore "bobb" , if all you had to say was "reinstall windows"
then at least have the decency and honesty and integrity to admit
beforehand, that you don't know the direct solution.

And maybe you can have the sense to see from the semi-intelligent way
he phrased his subject, that he probably knows of the reinstalling
windows solution. (which is of course such a common and obvious
solution, you add nothing by mentioning it on its own as a solution
here).

Ideally, Chris Coaster would have had the sense to have said.. "I am
aware of the reinstalling windows option. But besides that, any
ideas?"
But he didn't have that sense. And you have less sense. So don't
patronize him.

James.
Yeah I was patronizing as this is his second thread asking the same
question.
15 people responded to his other post.

he posted this thread, had no response, then posted
this thread "DO I POST THE WEIRDEST COMPUTER PROBLEMS OR DO YOU GUYS
SIMPLY NOT KNOW??"

I saw the second thread, but put my response into the first thread,
because it was more appropriately titled.
So, better for archiving the problem and working towards a solution.

Quote:
He wants a magic bullet. I gave him one.

He didn't ask for one.

He asked what was going on, and I don't think anybody knows, why he
gets the blobs. The closest I could suggest was a route by which he
could try to find out.

Quote:
He had a printer problem - he later said  "I initially chalked it up to
"Vista's learning curve" so touted in magazines and literature about
Vista."

Obviously he has flawed analysis skills.

But he is still describing a problem and asking about it. And that's
what this computer newsgroup (and most of them) is/are about..

Quote:
He's running IE with XP  "AT WORK" , and has a hiccup 4 times in 3 months
but he hasn't asked his IT support. They might know immediately what it
is. If not  - they can 'restore' OR 'reimage' OR 'reinstall' XP.

Whether it occurred at work or at home is not that important. If there
are techies at his work place he could ask them, and get more input.

But it's good to have problems and solutions documented here.

It's bad that techies don't document their own findings more often
here.. So we are left with many idiot end uesrs to do it.

Quote:
At home he has a printer that prints stuff he didn't ask it to .  And he's
demanding fixes from us in the alt.computer group  ( not the Vista group -
not the XP group). Read  full thread of
DO I POST THE WEIRDEST COMPUTER PROBLEMS OR DO YOU GUYS SIMPLY NOT KNOW??

He criticised answers he was getting.

Never bothered me if people criticise my answers.

Most people here have this stupid mentality that it's the OP, and
them, and they are helping the OP.And they are in this one to one
setting. And the OP dare not criticise any answer they give, because
they do this out of the goodness of their heart.
And if a non-OP criticises their posts well, then they go quiet.
Because they have no care for truth, they just want to feel like they
are helping.

The OP was right to wonder why he had no response to his post in this
thread.. (he had had no response until he posted the other thread -
and then he got a response from me).
I can tell him why he had no response. It's because his question was
what was going on. Not what can he do..
Nobody knows what is going on, nobody has ever had blogs in their
favourites. But it's good that he documented it , or tried to. Even
though he failed to put the blogs/dots in his subject.

If he "demands" answers.. And I don't think that's a bad thing. He
didn't really "demand". He said "next" to an answer he thought was
bad. That suggests that if anybody is going to bother replying, then
make it a good one otherwise don't bother.

Every question and answer should be for the benefit of the usenet
community. This thread he started is.

Shame he is has not even documented looking into the problem himself
in the obvious way I mentioned. Play around /experiment in the
directory where favourites are stored.

If more techies here bothered to post their findings, then maybe it
would be a reflection that "techies" here don't have this stupid
mentality of people ask, they give their personal dumbed down help.
And we could actually build up a reasonable archive of good
information for techies. Which they could then use to help end users
further. It won't happen, but i'm making a point, that you're all
pathetic idiots. Useless end users and useless techies.
